The software does not clutter up with too many windows and textures. My work is based on my experience as a seafarer. I have found that I can easily identify machinery parts and modifications, which I can send to others for them to understand.


Anim8or can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the operating system shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista having been tested. Windows XP is supported. You have probably never heard of anim8or. It's a simple, standalonefree 3D modeling and animation software for Windows, created by one of Nvidia's geeky software engineers. Theprogram does not require installation, takes only about 2MB of space and will even run on Linux through Wineproperly. Sounds good, so why not test it?


Ah, the one big question is, do you want this program? There's a ton of free 3D software just waiting for you,Google SketchUp, Kerkythea, POV-Ray, Blender, all of which have had their share of reviews and tutorials onDedoimedo. You know them, and you love them. So there's this new kid on the block, anim8or. Not as popular asthe rest, less mainstream, some odd choices here and there. Still, it merits a review, and that is exactly whatI did.


You can also apply materials to your objects, edit the textures and all the other stuff you expect from typical3D software. In this regard, anim8or does not lag behind, but the interface would benefit from somesimplification.


But then, you grab a proper 3D model and have some real fun. anim8or works with all kinds of file format, butyour best bet is 3DS. But if you don't have your models in 3DS, perhaps only free Collada or Google Earth, thenyou might want to load them in Blender and then export as 3DS.


Now, this is just a beginning. You can do a lot of powerful stuff in this little program. You may want to checkthe gallery to see what kind of beautiful, inspiringwork other people did, sometimes using only anim8or and sometimes in combination with other software. I tookthe liberty to post a small-size screenshot of one of the more beautiful models posted there, just to show youwhat can be done when you set your passion to it.


Not all is rosy. All in all, anim8or has a somewhat difficult, non-intuitive interface. Moreover, the laststable - or rather beta - version is the 0.97d preview, three years old, although quite capable of providingwhat you want or need. It does not seem as if the program will see a new edition, though.


anim8or might be a dead or at least a dormant project. It's not easy to use and will throw up a few nastyerrors here and there, whether when you try to run it on Windows or when you go for some complex rendering.Funnily, there were no usability problems on Linux, the one platform not designed to run this software in thefirst place. But the rendering issues were universal.


All combined, the rather difficult interface, the setup woes and the end result problems make anim8or a trickychoice for the casual user. But if you're an artist who would like to experiment with different programs andyou already have a good understanding of the 3D dynamics that exist in other software, you will find anim8or anadequate choice.


Its major advantages are its simplicity - fast, light, portable, no fussing when or where, free and overall,quite powerful. If only the usage model was made easier, it could be a good choice for your 3D work. So I guessanim8or deserves 7/10, perhaps 8/10 on a sunny day. Overall, I'm pleased and I intend to use this software nowand then. Which means, we might have yet more nice galleries coming soon.


This software is licensed as freeware for personal computers or laptops with a 64-bit operating system and 32-bit windows. It is in the category of a graphic editor and is available to all users of software for download. In summary, Anim8or is a very powerful and useful 3D modeler with a lot of options.


As discussed in the last paragraph, Anim8or's greatest strength is its use of Open Source software which allows it to integrate very well with different kinds of hardware such as computers, smartphones and even game consoles. This means that you don't have to use any kind of converter to convert your animation or model into whatever format the software accepts. Instead, all you need to do is to plug it into the relevant cable or connect it to a USB port on your computer. You can then use your computer's sound card to output the generated 3d graphics. To make it easier for you to start modeling with anim8or, here is an easy step-by-step guide on how to get started with the program.


To get started with Anim8or, first download and install the MS Windows drivers. Then launch the MS Windows program and click on the "Anim8or" icon. Finally, click "New" to create a new project from scratch. This is how you will start modeling with anim8or - by creating a new 3d graphics, importing an existing texture from a picture or a computer program, adding an actor with basic movements, changing the hairstyle of the actor, changing his voice and finally putting the character into the scene with some simple lighting effects or background music.


Sorry, we aren't looking for beautiful people to advertise Celestia.:-)Celestia is a real-time 3D astronomical visualization program.You can learn more about it at addition to spherical planets and moons, Celestia can display models of objects that have been designed using 3D modelling programs:irregular asteroids, magnetic field lines, telescopes, spacecraft or even buildings and vegetation. It can't do smoke, though.This is a description of some of the things that I've learnedabout creating 3D models for use with Celestia.This document is by no means complete. [back to Contents]1.0 Model Formats.Celestia can display 3D models that are in any of three different formats. They can beeither 3DS or one of Celestia's two proprietary formats, CMS or CMOD.3DS is a binary file format first used by the modelling program3D Studio Max. The current version of that program uses a differentfile format called MAX. Celestia does not understand MAX format.3DS models can be created by most of the available modelling programsif you select one of their Export options. Alternatively, there are utilitiesto convert other proprietary formats into 3DS.CMS is a "deprecated" model format used to tell Celestia how todraw irregular blobs, usually asteroids.CMOD is a versatile model format optimized foruse with OpenGL, the 3D language used by Celestia. It has both ASCII(text) and binary versions.The CMOD format is relatively verbose: its files are significantlylarger than their 3DS counterparts.In spite of this, Celestia can draw CMOD models about 1.5-2x as fast as it can draw 3DS models.A more detailed description of the CMOD format is available at seb/celestia/cmod_format.htmlDifferent versions of OpenGL are included with most computer operating systems and are designed intothe hardware of all modern 3D graphics cards. Because of the format's simplicity, several people have written their ownprivate utilities to generate CMOD models for Celestia,using Mathematica, Fortran and other programming languages. [back to Contents]3.0 Orientation.When drawn by Celestia, 3DS models usually will not have the orientationthat you expect. Instead of standing upright, they'll be lying on theirsides:objects are rotated 90 degrees around their X axis.(See below for why this happens.)There are several ways to work around this problem. None areparticularly satisfactory.Rotate the model -90 degrees around the X axis before exporting it from yourmodelling program. (-90 = +270: 3 90 degree rotations)This is easy to forget.Design the model with this rotation to begin with.Working on a model with this rotation is quite awkward.In the model's SSC catalog for Celestia, specify Orientation [-90 0 0]and add this factor into whatever other modificationsyou have to make to the Orientation command.Use or write an export script for your modelling programwhich does not include this rotation.It is very unlikely that Celestia will be modified at this late dateto change this behavior. Too many Addons have been designed with thisrotation included.The author of Anim8or had this to say about the situation:When exporting from Anim8or to a .3ds file I transform the coordinatesinto .3ds coordinates as follows:x' = x;y' = -z;z' = y;This transformation is what is needed to make Anim8or exported to .3dsformat models load correctly in 3D Studio Max.As a result, you can expect to see a similar rotation in Celestia when using other modellers which try to be compatible with 3DS Max.The objects aren't lazy, it's just that Celestia does not tryto emulate 3DS Max.This is one of the reasons I decided to write my own CMOD export scriptfor Anim8or. Scripts were a new cabability in in Anim8or v0.95, whichwas first available for beta testing in September, 2006. From then on, Anim8or will remember that location. All scripts in that directrory will be automatically loaded when Anim8or starts.Put the script in the directory with Anim8or (or wherever youwant: e.g. a Scripts subdirectory in the Anim8or folder)Start Anim8or. Select the "File" menu Select the item "Configure..."In the "Scripts:" line, enter the location of the directory where you put the script. You can use the [...] button to find it.Check the box "Preload Scripts" if it isn't already.Then press the button "OK"Anim8or will remember this setting when it exits.When you are ready to save a model in CMOD format, Open the "Objects" menuSelect the object to be exportedSelect the "Export..." itemScroll down in the "Save as type:" menu and select the line"Celestia: plug-in (*.cmod_mesh)"Set the "File name:" appropriatelySelect "Save"After exporting a model from Anim8or, combine the files so that the material file is first in the resulting .CMOD file, and the mesh file is second.In a Windows Command window, you can type a command likeCOPY name.CMOD_MATERIAL/B + name.CMOD_MESH/B name.CMOD/BThe /B switches are needed to prevent Windows from inserting a Ctrl-Zwhich would keep Celestia from using the output file. Replacename by the actual name of your files.In a Cygwin command window under Windows, you can use a command likecat name.cmod_material name.cmod_mesh > name.cmodThis Celestia CMOD export script for Anim8or has the followingadvantages:Anim8or's X, Y and Z axes align with Celestia's coordinate system.This is unlike 3DS models. Models created using this scriptwill not have the same orientations as 3DS models exporteddirectly from Anim8or.All textures specify Celestia's Wildcard filetype. As a result,you can use different image filetypes without editing the model.You can use a JPEG, GIF and PNG surface texture image while working inAnim8or, but use a DDS surface texture image in Celestia. PNG support became available in recent Beta versions of Anim8or, but it still does not understand DDS textures.Different materials can be used on the different facets of each mesh within the model. When exporting a 3DS model, only a single material can be used on each mesh within the model.Specularity and Emissive surface texture image files can be used.3DS models do not support either.A summary of shape, material, vertex and triangle usage is included at the end of the mesh file.The script does have a major disadvantage:It creates two separate files which must be concatenated together. The file name.cmod_material contains all of the materials.The other file, name.cmod_mesh,contains all of the meshes.The script has to write separate material and mesh files at the sametime because Anim8or groups materials with each of theShapes that use them. The last material is not available to the exportscript until the last Shape also is available.In contrast, Celestia's CMOD format requires all of the materials to be defined before any mesh is defined.The script also exposes some limitations in the compatibilitybetween Anim8or and Celestia:Material color intensity scale factors:Each of the surface texture characteristics in Anim8or's Material Editorhas an associated intensity scale factor. Most have an intended rangeof 0.0 to 1.0, but no range checks are performed. Celestia has no suchintensity scale factor, so the export script multiplies the texture's RGB color values byAnim8or's intensity scale factor when defining Celestia's materials. Texture maps: Anim8or supports Ambient, Bumpmap and Environment maps.Celestia does not.Celestia v1.5 and later support NormalMaps. Anim8or does not.If a Bumpmap texture file is used in Anim8or, a correspondingNormalMap entry is created in the exported cmod file. The usershould provide a NormalMap surface texture that is equivalent to the BumpMap.Vector lists:Anim8or generates Trilists. Celestia includes support for Tristrips,which are much more efficient.Surface normals:This problem is fixed in Anim8or v9.5 beta4 (available as of 22Oct06)Animator's "normals" weren't being rotated with the models and cmodfix had to be used to regenerate them. This no longer is necessary.Specularity:Anim8or's default specular color is white, which translates to Celestia's SpecularColor [1 1 1] The bright, white color causes Celestia's highlight to be glarihglybright. Anim8or doesn't show it so bright.To reduce the glare, change Anim8or's Specular color to a shade ofgrey, or other appropriate color.To eliminate the glare entirely, change Anim8or's Specular color to black.Anim8or's defaut specular brightness is 0.200.which is multiplied by the color values when exporting to CMOD format.Warning: if Anim8or's Specular brightness value is set to 0, then it will deletethe associated Specular color, setting it to white.Anim8or's "Rough" parameter (range 0-100) is scaled and exported asCelestia's CMOD SpecularPower (range 0-255). No range checks areperformed.Brilliance:Celestia has no texture quality corresponding to Anim8or's"Brilliance.". That material characteristic is ignored by the export script.Note: Anim8or development was on hiatus for a while, but new versions were released starting in late 2014. Build 1185 works well for me under Windows 7. (For reasons unrelated to Anim8or, one should avoid Windows 10 if at all possible. Cartrite, a member of the Celestia Web Forum, has writtena script to export CMOD models from Blender. That script originally wasavailable on the Celestia Web Forum, but the Forum is no longer available. You should be able to find a copy of the script by doing a Web search. However, it has not been updated to be compatible with the current version of Blender. [back to Contents]5.0 Optimization.Here are some hints on improving model performance in Celestia:Use as few CMOD model files as possibleThere is a substantial overhead in loading and drawing eachmodel file within Celestia. A single large model file can be drawnmuch more quickly than several small ones.Use as few materials as possible.There is a substantial overhead for each material definitionwithin a model. Models with fewer material definitions will load and runfaster.Merge individual meshes within a model into a single mesh[Merging meshes is no longer necessary. Material optimization is now done automatically in Celestia v1.5.0 ]This reduces the total number of materials and point lists needed.Usually a separate set of materials is maintained for each meshor solid within a model. If the separate meshes use identical materials, merging the meshes will eliminate those duplicates.(Anim8or has a "Build/Join Solids" command which does this.Chris is hoping to extend the functionality ofcmodfix to merge identical materials, but this has notyet happened as of September, 2006.)Note: If you merge meshes that have different types of materials,use cmodfix only to convert the merged result into binary format.Do not apply any of its other functions. They can handle only a singlematerial per mesh. The results will not look like what you want.Use the simplest objects possible.It takes time to calculate the location of each vertex and thematerialsassociated with it. Minimize the number of vertices and materials in yourmodel.Default bodies usually include many more divisions than necessary.For example, Anin8or's default cylinder has 8 Latitude divisions.Usually only 1 is needed.Avoid creating unnecessary subdivisions or smoothing operations.Limit subdividing and smoothing to the regions that need it.Subdividing an entire mesh creates many unnecessary verticesin a model.Eliminate parts of models that never will be seen.For example, unless you are designing your model to be viewed from the inside,delete surfaces and points that are on the interior.
